This is Cuba – An Outlaw Culture Survives

by Rick Lowe

The ongoing musings of the Cuban Ambassador to The Bahamas in support of the Castro regime are very interesting.

Visiting Cuba gives one the sense that things are not all the Communist regime’s sympathisers here in The Bahamas make them out to be. But, doubt sets in when you read the continual barrage of Cuban propaganda being circulated about town. You almost start to believe that what you saw was a bad dream, and all is well with the many wonderful people on that beautiful island.

However, when you start to feel drunk on the jubilation of the select few Cuban’s that can benefit from the “system” there you should read This is Cuba – An Outlaw Culture Survives by Ben Corbett available from Westview Press first released in 2002.

Here is a brief quote from the liner notes:

At a time when Cuba walks prercariously on the ledge between socialism and capitalism, This is Cuba gets to the heart of this so-called outlaw culture, taking readers into the living rooms, rooftops, parks, and city streets to hear stories of frustration, hope and survival.

It’s like a breath of fresh air amid the smog of people attempting to defend the indefensible.
