NHI Legislation by this summer?

by Rick Lowe

Dr. Bernard Nottage, Minister of Health is quoted in today’s Tribune as saying he wants to get National Health Insurance legislation passed by parliament by July or August and have everything set to go by December 2006 so the government can implement the scheme whenever it is ready to do so.

This seems at direct odds with the Blue Ribbon Commission and an announcement made by the former Minister, Dr. Marcus Bethel earlier this year when it was projected that the program might be introduced in another 18 months, after more discusson with the stakeholders.

Despite his protestations otherwise, Dr. Nottage has had Socialistic tendancies, but these comments indicate that someone is being disingenuous – either the Blue Ribbon Commission, Dr. Bethel or Dr. Nottage.

While on the subject of Health Care, Don Boudreaux of Cafe Hayek, one of this bloggers favourite weblogs made these comments about government controlled health care, in this blog titled Anything Different About Medical Care?.

What do you think about all of this?

Thanks for the comment whoever you may be.
Why is it obvious they’re rushing to pass the legislation?
Also, the Hot Topic piece today is for comparative purposes with the Weekly Focus by the Governor of The Central Bank. If you read both of them the reason for highlighting the Dr. Rabushka speech from 10 years ago becomes relevant.
By the way, Dr. Rabuska is world renowned and respected with expertise in taxation. See his web site by clicking here: http://www.stanford.edu/~rabushka/
