Intrigue in Bahamian Politics

Seven brave MP's exercised their Constitutional right today and "overthrew" the leader of the FNM in Parliament.

There is clearly a deep division between Dr. Minnis and the majority of FNM MP's. In hindsight it must be much deeper than one might surmise given the gravity of sitting MP's charging their "leader" with, well, shall we say, incompetence?

The coming days in Parliament should be the stuff history is made of.

As for the FNM political party, Dr. Minnis remains the leader of the organisation, and one has to wonder if he had gone against the will of the South Abaco Constituency Association and nominated the 78 year old Mr. Key if this would have taken place.

A cursory glance of an old FNM Party Constitution is silent on matters like this, but there are hundreds of years of history of the British Parliament, home of the Westminster System, where guidance might be found. There might even be legal cases that were settled for reference.

However, it appears to me this could be too serious a blight for Dr. Minnis to recover from and in all fairness should resign.

Should he stand his ground there could a bloodletting within the FNM and about him.

Of course the governing PLP would delight with this apparent turmoil within their main Opposition. But that only disguises the fact that they are not courageous enough to challenge their failed leader whom they speak so badly about behind his back.

These are intriguing times.
