Dear Mr. Editor WeblogBahamas,
My initial comments on the gender equality fiasco:
Mr. Christie, you are the very last person to cast aspersions against the leader of the opposition. I’m quite sure you remember 2002 when you and your party, then in opposition, voted with the Government for the various equality Bills in Parliament, then, subsequently, saw political mileage in haranguing the populace to vote “No” in the following Referendum. Mr. Christie I am very confident that neither you nor I at any point in the run-up to yesterday’s fiasco heard the good doctor instruct anybody to vote “No” to your Bills; yes he did tell the people to “vote your conscience” but that is not a No, therefore, Mr. Christie, no-one can claim that Dr. Minnis, unlike you, reneged on any commitments made. In fact, Mr. Christie, Dr. Minnis did recommend that you not “overplay” your position.
I remember the “Vote No” campaign crashing onto the scene with cries of “a hidden agenda” against the establishment, well, I would opine that any hidden agenda was with the “Vote No” crowd, because one has to wonder if this resounding referendum defeat might, perhaps, be the Bahamian Male trying to re-assert his dwindling leadership in society where his women must walk three paces behind? It was also very noticeable that until very late in the campaign all the Vote No speakers were male … !!
To paraphrase the 2002 general election race could yesterday’s loser also lose in 2017?
Until later,
Harry Strachan
