Before the last general election there was hardly a day that went by that Mr. Keith Bell, the spokesman on crime for the PLP when in Opposition, was not blaming the FNM government of the day for our crime problems.
Now that his party is the Government and he is the Junior Minister with responsibility National Security, crime is now the fault of the US because "We don't manufacture guns in this country" and the US is deporting hardened criminals back here.
Bear in mind, according to Mr. Bell, these people are "Bahamians, stateless or The Bahamas was their last port of entry before entering the U.S."
Presumably The Bahamas has a treaty with the United States that allows them to send these folks back here? And if not, how is it possible if they have no connection here?
So what's Mr. Bell's solution? A National ID card.
So let me see if I can understand all this.
- Bahamians would not commit crime if the US didn't make guns.
- The US is not entitled to send Bahamians that commit crime in the US back home.
- Stateless people (read people with Haitian heritage born in The Bahamas) that might have been in The Bahamas all of their life until they got to the US, can't be sent back here. And
- A National ID card will fix it all.
My position on a National ID card remains the same as enunciated here… but where on earth do these ideas come from?
It seems that Mr. Bell is confronted with the same situation the FNM had. Mind you the solutions were easily resolved when he was in Opposition. Now that he sits in the chair, it's America's fault. Go figure!
I wish him luck with helping resolve the crime problem, but blaming our closest ally, the US, surely can't be the best thing to do?
Passing the blame is now a Bahamian game.. We hear this time and again from the Obama Administration and now this left-wing excuse is becoming the gospel for government and Mr. Bell.. Just more meaningless and empty words that that have no substance to a nation beset by runaway crime..
The real issue here is found in the character flaws of the Bahamian people, many who are the product of broken homes, a failed education system and religious foundation that has lost its way.. We have no one to blame but ourselves.. Many Bahamians seek jobs and employment but our failing economy policies have hampered investment and impeded employment opportunities.. We don’t need empty words from government, we just need government to get out of the way.. For many crime becomes necessary for basic survival..
To blame America for our own social failings is shear folly.. Guns do not kill people they are only a means to-and-end.. We as a nation have enacted some of the most restricted gun laws in the world, yet it has had no meaningful impact on reducing murder and runaway crime.. It is “we ourselves” that are at fault as our values for individual life and personal property are declining into the void of emptiness.. Our government and former governments have only come up with piecemeal solutions and excuses to a cancer-like problem that is destroying our social fabric and future.. Perhaps in the end only the Grace of God can save us from ourselves and bring peace and salvation to the Bahamian people..
Excuse me Mr.Bell, please take that very large plank of wood out of your own eye first, then you will see that the very poor police work that has been done on at least one murder case that I know about. Not just poor, very poor & I am not alone in this. For Bell to blame the US on his teams poor Investigation skills a terrible excuse at the least.I have spoken to many family members of victims & they all say the same thing, very poor police work.Don’t get me wrong,we do have some good police out there but woe is me there are some very bad investigators to.I know someone who had experienced investigators from the US who told them certain things that were key to their case but our great force said they meant nothing.Someone tell me how you can get an honest jury pool when they all know the bad things that the police do.If the defendants cry police brutality long enough it seems like they become believable, even when seemingly guilty. The police also do not want any help at all, even the FBI.What are they afraid of,the truth ? I think so.
