Lets separate church and state!

by Adrian Gibson

I am not one to regularly agree with my good ole second cousin Raynard Rigby, but this time he seems to have a valid point when he seemed to have suggested that the church should foster healing.

I think that the Bahamas Christian Council’s new president, John Humes, was out of line with his recent comments about politics, the PLP’s election court fight, etc. I am a staunch proponent of the notion that the church and state should remain two separate entities. However, in the Bahamas, that wall separating church and state seems to be non existent.

Considering the good Bishop’s position, I think that he should have abstained from making comments that could have been construed as partisan……and rightfully so.

While Rigby has come out reeling against Humes, he must also remember to do the same when so-called ministers with a PLP bent do the same, for e.g. Neil Ellis and Ros Davis. Mr Rigby’s voice was unheard when it was reported that one of these "ministers" told members of his congregation, that had different political views to "haul hip".

I wonder if Bishop Humes spoke to the church community before making his comments. Frankly, it seems that the Bishop was using the platform to also make a name for himself. Humes, as the man who stands as the figure head of the church in the Bahamas, has lost some credibility and, in my opinion, the criticism of him is more than justified.

  1. Bill's avatar Bill says:

Bishop Humes needs to read his bible.
False Prophet?!?!…Second Peter vs 1 and 2 would answer that.
Humes, as the political animal he wants to appear as, is pandering to the emotions of the crowd and at the same time, garnering attention to himself as the new Chief Christian, heheheehe, I jeer of course.
I see why secularists and non-Christians, hate Christianity and mock it, because we have mud slinging, vile tongued gutter mouthed “men of the cloth” like Humes and Macilpine, who insult the idea of Christianity being about peace and decency with every nasty word they utter.
How dare that man, ask for the death penalty as a Christian, when there is no reference to it in the bible, and killing is against the teachings of God and Jesus!?!?
Just because they say “give to Ceasar what is his”…does not mean the Church should condone the state, when the state has an unjust and evil act against the laws of God.
Humes just showed himself, for the wicked man that he is. I have no mercy for false men and women like that, because they are wicked and confused in their tongue and if they are not exposed, the same chapter in 2nd Peter says that soon enough, they will be disposed and destroyed.
So, if you see him, tell him Bill said to shut up, and let the real Christians and Democratico’s deal with this one.
So, Church and state should be separated, but the church needs to keep it’s voice in the realm of tolerance and forgivness, as it is mandated by the Christian faith through Jesus and his disciples teachings. And THEN, let the state sort out what it wants to keep in it’s legal codes.
